What is Central Serous Retinopathy?
Central Serous Retinopathy (CSR) is a condition where fluid builds up within the retina, mostly affecting the central retinal area (the macula). Although CSR can affect adults of all ages, young and middle-aged adults form the largest age group of people that have been affected by CSR.
What can cause CSR?
The exact cause of CSR is still not fully understood. However, known risk factors include stress, use of steroids, underlying high blood pressure, males, and age.
What are the symptoms that I should look out for?
CSR can cause blurring of your vision, especially your central vision as it affects the macula mainly. You may also notice a dark area in the center of your vision that does not go away. Straight lines may look wavy. Colors may look duller than normal.
What should I do if I suspect I may have CSR?
Do not panic! If you start to notice disturbances in your vision, book a visit with an eye doctor as soon as you can. Early intervention is always better than a later one.
What are the treatment options available for CSR?
There are currently several treatment options for CSR. In some cases, no treatment may even be required and the doctor may simply keep you under observation for resolution. However, if the condition does not resolve on its own, the treatment options include:
1. Lifestyle modification: reduction of stress levels may help resolve CSR without any treatment intervention.
2. Photodynamic therapy: uses special light to treat the fluid within the retina
3. Laser therapy: seals leaky blood vessels
4. Anti-VEGF intravitreal injections: injections into the eye to stop leakage of fluid within the retina
5. Steroid-sparing medication: combats inflammation and other underlying causes.
Final notes
CSR is normally a temporary condition which may reflect underlying issues. Treatment is focused on treating the underlying health issue and the fluid within the retina. Undergoing treatment can help to speed up the recovery process. Most people who have been affected by CSR regain good vision after treatment and continue their daily activities as per normal.
